The role of the expert witness is to assist the court in making its decision. An expert witness is anyone with the unique knowledge, skills or experience in a particular field or discipline beyond that expected of the average person. Even where claims may eventually be settled out of court, either party to a claim often requires an expert-led assessment to be carried out in order to furnish a professional report and expert statement on a particular matter.
